I just returned from a trip to Wilmington, North Carolina to find some goodies in this week's CSA share. I mentioned before that the extreme rainfall in East Tennessee has taken its toll on our local farms, and so our shares the past few weeks have been lighter than usual. If you look back at some of my CSA posts from the past couple of years, you'll see a big difference in the boxes this year. But that's part of the CSA experience. It's an investment, and you can have tremendous rewards or risks. This season we're taking some risks.
It's unfortunate that the recent weather has impacted the quantity and quality of the vegetables; however, we believe in our farm and know that they're doing all they can to maintain value for their shareholders. In fact, to supplement our shares, they included extra vegetables from another local farm in this week's box. They didn't need to do that. But they did.
So here's what we got:
- Hot chile peppers (very hot!)
- Squash (from the other farm)
- Peaches (from the other farm)
This is still plenty of delicious produce for the week, and there's no doubt that the hard work of our farmers and the improving weather conditions will yield even more bountiful CSA boxes for our future pickups.
